Winter 2008

Christmas seems to be approaching fast and here at our shop in Leek, Staffordshire, we have been taking delivery of our new Christmas stock. We have lots of lovely new things and plenty of stocking fillers. If you are near enough to visit us we hope that you will do so soon and enjoy browsing around the shop as we have lots of wonderful stock that is not available to view on our website. In our upstairs showroom we offer free tea and coffee so that you can take a restorative break with us. We're always willing to offer our help and advice; so if you have a decorating problem you think we might be able to help with please do get in touch. Or perhaps you might like to read the Period Features blog and keep up to date with what's happening at our department store for period homes? You'll find it here: http://infopreneurl.typepad.com/periodfeatures/

We had the first snow of the year in October so, following on from the last issue on fireplaces in the period home, this issue we look at where to find advice on log burning stoves - a cosy, inexpensive to run and relatively green fuel.

A very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from the team at Period Features!

If you can't see this newsletter properly (this is the case if it's not coming through in glorious Technicolor, with images) you can now view it and all the past editions on our www.periodfeatures.net

Log Burning stoves

Heating engineers and chimney sweeps alike assure me that there has been a real rush to remove gas and electric fires and return to solid fuel in order to cut down on heating bills as the credit crunch bites. It's not just heating bills that are reduced by the switch to solid fuel though; log burners, wood chips and wood pellets are some of the most environmentally friendly fuels possible as they only contribute to CO2 emissions via the processing and transport of the wood. For anyone with a ready access to inexpensive or free logs a wood burner makes real sense. However, there is very little information available on important issues such as which size and type of stove to buy, what is meant by a clean burning or airwash stove and what heat output you need for your room size. There are many factors to consider before switching to solid fuel such as the type of flue liner required and the building regulations that apply to stoves. A good source of information is Stoves Online Ltd based in Dartmouth. Stoves Online is a family business that has been making, repairing, selling and installing wood burning stoves, multifuel stoves, and wood burners for over thirty years. Hi Suzy,
Just a quick note to say thank you. I received the toilet roll holders this morning and they look even better than they do on the website. Loved the packaging too!

Thanks again,

The desire to make our homes draught-proof and to upgrade the insulation has led to many traditional box sash windows been replaced with uPVC double glazed windows. Replacement windows often clash with the proportions of the house but this is a sacrifice many people will accept in order to have a warmer home. It is possible to restore and improve your existing sash windows and have the best of both worlds and there are many websites offering help and advice. Sash-style www.sash-style.co.uk offer free advice on all aspects of maintaining sash windows from DIY advice on re-cording a window to draught-proofing it with DIY kits. There is also a directory of people who can take on this work for you. Wonderful Websites

All too often those not drinking alcohol are left feeling rather uncomfortable at parties, standing out with a glass of lemonade, cola or orange juice in their hand whilst other guests or their hosts tell them that 'surely one drink wouldn't be a problem?' The solution is to provide a good range of alcoholic free drinks such as hot or cold fruit punches, alcohol free beer and wine. The latter has traditionally had something of a poor reputation but good alcohol free wine does exist and is perfect for your festive gatherings. For a large range of the above, along with Champagne and liqueurs available by mail order from single bottles to whole cases, visit the LoNo Drinks Company Ltd at www.lono.co.uk

If you want to be sure of being able to find fresh holly to decorate your home this Christmas you could order a mixed box of sprigs variegated and green, berried, holly from www.hollybypost.co.uk

The British Christmas Tree Growers Association www.christmastree.org.uk has a list of retailers who sell trees fresh from the field which should mean that they will last longer. Advice on the types of trees available and how to care for them can also be found on the site.

Christmas markets offer not just a shopping experience but an opportunity to get into the festive mood. Whilst the most famous Christmas markets are to be found in Germany and Austria, in recent years there has been a huge growth in home grown Christmas markets. Find one to suit you and enjoy some outdoor shopping and a glass of mulled wine at one of the 154 UK markets listed at www.christmasmarkets.com
